The Sustainable Manufacturing Alliance for Research and Training Industrial Assessment Center (SMART IAC), hosted by the University of California, Irvine is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Assessment Centers Program.
We provide no-cost energy consulting services to manufacturers within 150 miles of UC Irvine (Orange, Ventura, Imperial and Riverside counties.) Our assessments typically require one day on site in your facility and we typically identify 10-20% energy and productivity savings.
As part of our services, we will deliver a detailed, professional report outlining several ways that your facility can save energy and money. Our analysis includes detailed engineering and economic calculation of potential energy saving ideas. We typically only target recommendations that result in a 2-year financial payback for our clients.

SMART IAC & Kern Community College District
The Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) program is expanding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to increase green job training and support cleaner buildings and industry. In November 2023, the DOE announced the selection of 27 projects to expand the program, including the award to the Kern Community College District (KCCD). This program expansion with community colleges will broaden paths to clean energy careers that don’t require a four-year degree. The project with KCCD will establish a Central California IAC to conduct energy assessments, foster regional partnerships, and provide workforce development opportunities for community college students and union workers in fields like industrial automation and heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration
(HVAC). The project will contribute to America’s manufacturing and clean energy competitiveness in a high-unemployment, highly agricultural, oil-and-gas-transitioning, and largely underserved part of California with a diverse population of over seven million people. The UCI SMART IAC has partnered with KCCD to help them establish their new IAC center and train their staff to support the mission of the IAC program.
